Yes, that is fine. It is not too important what kind of bag you put your stuff in as long as your stuff fits into it. I do like the color of that bag though.
lightweight hiking gear Hiking up a mountain… two day trip… advice…?
I am hiking up a tree covered mountain close to my town in washington and I don“t really have a set route, all I have are a few satalite pictures, rumors of an old logging road and a creek to follow up. I plan to hike one day and leave flagging tape behind, than to hike back down the next day. What should I bring. I am going with two people and all we really have is regular school backpacks, a 3 man tent that is really light, sleeping bags, and some other stuff. what gear do you suggest we bring, and what if any techniques could we use in our bushwacking adventure. Also, what kinds of foods would you suggest we bring. We are carrying up hotdogs for our first lunch that we will eat along the way, but what as far as lightweight and yummy camping food what would you suggest! Also, what sort of things should I bring to hang food from bears, dry clothes, or take care of ourselves and find our way home should we find ourselves in an emergency or lost!
Walking sticks.. they are seriously good things. I was surprised how good it was when I did a two day trip up/down a mountain on a set route. The path was marked here and there so I can’t offer tips for creating your own path since I haven’t done that. Definitely let people know where you’re going and when you expect to be back in case there’s an accident.
Rope & tarp. If it rains you can hang the tarp so you have a dry area to cook/eat. You might be able to hang your clothes under the tarp to dry as well, depending on how bad it rains. Layers of high-tech synthetic clothes–no cotton.
Peanut butter, jelly, and bread is pretty easy to carry, won’t go bad, and easy to assemble into sandwiches. If you bring dried fruit, don’t overdo it and eat too many. You don’t want the runs in the woods. (can you guess what happened to my friend during the mountain hike?) We had some of that space age freeze dried food and it was god awful.
AT Thru Hiking – What Do I Bring???
I live in NJ and a friend and I are planning on jumping onto the Appalachian Trail and heading as far South as we can. But i’m running into the problem of what to pack. I know I need to find a nice common ground between bringing everything I need but also not over-packing. Any recommended gear? Also, what kind of lightweight foods should be packed. Im pretty lost, please help.
Hiking the AT is a huge undertaking. Usually people plan for months or even years in advance. You need permits, gear, maps, trail guides, all sorts of food and supplies repackaged and packed in boxes and addressed to the places along the trail where you’ll pick them up along the way, someone back home to mail the boxes at the right time and adjust the contents if you call for something else. And that’s just the planning.
You also need gear and technique, and for that there’s no better school than one’s own experience. I could tell you to sleep under a tarp and leave the boots at home, but you could be petrified of the woods and unable to sleep so exposed or find out you have weak ankles from carrying too much gear. If you listen to the guy at the outdoors store, I’m sure he’d love to sell you all kinds of new gear you “need,” but actually you’ll end up with 50 lbs backpacks full of luxury junk, while I would buy a completely different set of gear, attempting to go “ultralight”, have exactly what I “need”, stay light, warm and dry, save money, and save so much effort on trail. If you don’t have any experience with ultralight, but already have a lot of old gear, you’ll probably try to make due with what you have, and that might work, but you’ll want to do better the next time.

Yes, you can carry a weapon as long as it isn’t concealed.
Only a fool would go in the back country without a rifle, shotgun or at minimum, a pistol.

hunting sportsman Outdoor Hunting stores near Oregon City?
I just moved to Oregon City and am looking for a store similar to Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shop or Sportsman’s Warehouse. I travel into the Portland Metro area frequently but having to travel more than 45 min to an hour is unlikely to happen. Any suggestions? Thanks!
There is a Sportsman’s Warehouse just off the 205 at exit 17. There are also some sporting goods stores inside Oregon City you might want to try if you don’t want to go into the Metro area.
I have never been west of MO, but I love internet maps.
